Narvi (pronounced NAR-vee) is one of the many moons that orbit the planet Saturn. It is also known as Saturn XXXI, which means it was the 31st moon of Saturn to be officially named. A team of astronomers led by Scott S. Sheppard first found Narvi in 2003. At that time, it was given the temporary name S/2003 S 1.

About Narvi

Narvi is a small moon, only about 7 kilometers wide. It travels around Saturn very far away, at an average distance of about 19.3 million kilometers. It takes Narvi a long time to complete one trip around Saturn – about 1006 days, which is more than two and a half years!

Narvi's path around Saturn is not a perfect circle; it's a bit stretched out. Also, its orbit is quite tilted compared to Saturn's equator.

How Narvi Got Its Name

Narvi was officially named in January 2005. Its name comes from Norse mythology, which is a collection of stories from ancient Scandinavia. In these myths, Narvi (also called Narfi or Nari) was a son of the trickster god Loki.

According to the myths, Narvi was involved in a sad story related to Loki's punishment. The gods used Narvi's fate to bind Loki. The name was officially approved by a group of scientists called the IAU Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature on January 21, 2005.
