Nassau (state) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nassau was a small country called a duchy that existed in Europe. It was formed in 1806, right after the Holy Roman Empire came to an end. Nassau didn't stay independent for long. It was taken over by other states and eventually became part of Germany in 1866.

Where Was Nassau?

The Duchy of Nassau was located in what is now western Germany. It was situated north of the famous Rhine River, not far from where the river flows near the French border.

Nassau was also south of the powerful Prussian Empire. Even though the country was named after the town of Nassau, this town was not its capital city. Later, Nassau played a part in the famous Battle of Waterloo in Belgium. After this, it was absorbed into Prussia.

Nassau's Role in History

The soldiers from Nassau often fought against the French army. They showed they could stand strong against their opponents. However, after a battle near the towns of Smohain and Frichermont, Nassau lost its independence. It became part of a group of states called the Confederation of the Rhine.

Later, Nassau helped in the important Battle of Waterloo. After this, it was absorbed into the Prussian Empire. Eventually, this area became part of the larger German Empire.
