Nassau Hall (Muttontown, New York) facts for kids

Nassau Hall is a very old and beautiful mansion located inside the Muttontown Preserve in Muttontown, New York. It was built a long time ago, in 1904, and was once known as Muttontown Meadows. This grand house has a rich history and is a special part of the preserve.

Nassau Hall: A Historic Mansion

Nassau Hall was designed by famous architects named Delano and Aldrich. This was their very first project in this area. The outside of the mansion was made to look like Mount Vernon, which was the home of George Washington. The estate around Nassau Hall was huge, covering about 183 acres of land!

The Story of Nassau Hall

The mansion was originally built for Bronson Winthrop. He was the first owner of this impressive home. Many years later, in 1950, a person named Lansdell Christie bought Nassau Hall.

Then, in 1969, Nassau Hall was sold to Nassau County. After that, it became the main office for the Nassau Parks Conservancy. This group helps take care of parks and natural areas. The mansion was carefully fixed up and made new again in 2010.

Mansions of Muttontown Preserve

Nassau Hall is not the only grand house in the Muttontown Preserve. It is one of three large mansions that were once part of this area. Another one is the Benjamin Moore Estate, which is also called Chelsea. Sadly, the third mansion, called the Knollwood Estate, was destroyed a long time ago.
