Nathaniel "Nat" Williams (born in 1956) is a law enforcement officer in the United States. He is the sheriff of St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. A sheriff is the head police officer for a large area, which in Louisiana is called a parish (similar to a county).
When he was elected, Williams became the first African American in history to hold the job of sheriff in St. Helena Parish.
Early Life and Career
Nathaniel Williams was born in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, where he also grew up and went to high school. To prepare for his career, he attended several special schools for law enforcement.
These included the Louisiana State University Basic Training Academy and the D.E.A. Training Academy. He also received training on how to supervise other officers.
Williams began working for the St. Helena Parish Sheriff's Department on May 8, 1990. He started as a patrolman and was promoted many times, eventually becoming the Chief of Operations.
Becoming Sheriff
In early 2007, the elected sheriff resigned, and Williams was chosen to be the acting sheriff. Later that year, he ran in an election to become the permanent sheriff. He won the election with over half of the votes.
Since then, he has been re-elected several times, including in 2019.
As sheriff, Williams promised to lead the department with honesty. He also planned to make important improvements. His goals included building a new jail, hiring more deputies to respond to calls faster, and making sure drivers follow the speed limit on highways.
