Early Life and College Basketball
Nate Higgs is quite tall, standing at 6 feet 7 inches. He went to Tarboro High School in Tarboro, North Carolina.
After high school, Nate played college basketball for the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Vikings. They were part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Nate was a star player. He was chosen for the all-conference team in 1992, 1993, and 1994. In 1993, he was even named the CIAA Player of the Year. He also led the all-conference team as captain that year.
Starting a Professional Career
In October 1994, Nate Higgs began his professional basketball journey. He had offers from several NBA teams like Charlotte, Milwaukee, and Miami. However, he decided to sign with the Seattle SuperSonics basketball team. He played as a forward-center for them. His agent believed Seattle offered the best chance for him to succeed in basketball.
After his time with the SuperSonics, Nate played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). This was another professional league in the United States. He was the second player chosen overall in the first round by the Omaha Racers.
Playing Around the World
Nate Higgs continued to play for many different teams. In 1995, he signed with the Vancouver (now Memphis) Grizzlies. He was one of the last players cut from the team. After that, he played for the Yakima Sun Kings, also in the CBA.
In 1996, Nate started his career in Europe. He joined the Uppsala Gators in Sweden. This is where he really began to make a name for himself. From 1997 to 1998, he played with Indepediente Argentina. His team finished third in the South America Cup.
Between 1999 and 2000, Nate Higgs won the Spanish ACB Slam Dunk Contest. He was also averaging about 13 points and 6 rebounds per game during that time.
Nate Higgs has played basketball in many countries. These include Italy, Greece, Israel, Argentina, France, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Lebanon. He has played in more than 20 countries worldwide. He has dual citizenship, meaning he is a citizen of both America and Spain.
Nate Higgs was honored by his college, Elizabeth City State University. He was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame on October 16, 2009. He is still active in European and Spanish basketball leagues as of July 2025.
