Nathalie Wahl is a brilliant mathematician from Belgium, born in 1976. She specializes in a field of math called topology. This area of math studies the shapes and spaces of objects. She is a professor of mathematics at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. She also leads a special research group there called the Copenhagen Center for Geometry and Topology.

Becoming a Mathematician

Nathalie Wahl was born in Brussels, Belgium. She started her math journey at the Université libre de Bruxelles. In 1998, she earned her first degree in mathematics. Her main project was about "infinite antimatroids," and she even published her findings in a science paper in 2001.

She then continued her studies at the University of Oxford in England. In 2001, she earned her Ph.D., which is a very advanced degree. Her special area of study was algebraic topology, and her project was about "Ribbon Graphs." Her teacher for this work was Ulrike Tillmann.

Her Journey as a Professor

After finishing her studies, Nathalie worked at a few different universities for short periods. These included Northwestern University and the University of Chicago in the United States, and Aarhus University in Denmark.

In 2006, she joined the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. She worked very hard and became a full professor there in 2010. This means she became a top teacher and researcher. In 2020, she took on an even bigger role. She became the leader of the Copenhagen Center for Geometry and Topology.

Nathalie Wahl has received several important awards for her work.

Young Elite Researcher Award

In 2008, she won the Young Elite Researcher Award. This award comes from the Independent Research Fund Denmark. It is given to young scientists who show great promise in their research.

Danish Academy of Natural Sciences

In 2016, Nathalie Wahl was chosen to be a member of the Danish Academy of Natural Sciences. This is a special group of top scientists in Denmark. Being elected to this academy is a big honor.
