Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nathaniel Dimsdale (born April 11, 1748 – died July 3, 1811) was a British doctor and politician. He is best known for his important work in Russia, where he helped fight smallpox. For his efforts, he was given a special title, a Baron, by the Russian Empire. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very respected group of scientists.

Early Life and Family

Nathaniel Dimsdale was born in 1748. He was the second son of Thomas Dimsdale, who was also a well-known doctor, banker, and politician from Hertfordshire, England. Nathaniel went to Eton School, a famous school in England.

Fighting Smallpox in Russia

In 1768, when Nathaniel was 20, he traveled with his father to Saint Petersburg, Russia. Their mission was very important: to protect the Russian royal family from smallpox. They successfully gave the smallpox vaccine to Catherine the Great, who was the Empress of Russia, and her son, Grand Duke Paul.

Because of their successful work, Nathaniel and his father were rewarded by the Russian Empire. They received a special payment each year, called an annuity. They were also given the title of Baron Dimsdale, which is a noble rank.

After returning from Russia, Nathaniel continued his education. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and earned his medical degree in 1771.

Return to Russia and Banking Career

Nathaniel Dimsdale went back to Russia with his father in 1781. They continued to help with more smallpox vaccinations for the royal family.

Besides his medical work, Nathaniel also became involved in his family's banking business. He became a partner in the bank, which was called Baron Dimsdale, Sons, Barnard and Staples.

A Career in Politics

In 1790, when his father retired, Nathaniel took over his father's role as a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he represented the town of Hertford in the British Parliament. He served as an MP until 1802.

Later Life and Achievements

In 1805, Nathaniel Dimsdale was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This honor meant he was recognized for his contributions to science and knowledge.

Sadly, Nathaniel's health was not good in his later years. He passed away in 1811 while on a trip to Brighton for his health. He was not married and left his property to his sister, Ann Dimsdale. His own title of Baron ended when he died, but his father's Baron title continued through his elder brother, John.
