National Assembly of Belarus facts for kids
The National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus is like the main law-making group, or parliament, for the country of Belarus. It has two important parts:
- The Council of the Republic, which is like the upper house.
- The House of Representatives, which is like the lower house.
These two parts meet every year to do their work. Their first meeting starts on October 2nd and lasts for up to 80 days. The second meeting begins on April 2nd and can last up to 90 days. Sometimes, the President of Belarus can ask them to meet a third time if needed.

Council of the Republic: The Upper House
The Council of the Republic is the upper house of the National Assembly. It has 64 members. These members represent different areas of Belarus.
Eight members of the Council are chosen directly by the President of Belarus. The other members are chosen by secret vote. Eight members are elected from each of Belarus's regions and from the city of Minsk. To be a member, a person must be at least 30 years old. They also need to have lived in the region they represent for at least five years.
