The National Assembly is like one of the two main groups that make up the Parliament of Pakistan. It's called the "lower house" and works with the "upper house" (the Senate) to make laws for the country. Together, these two groups form a two-part parliament.

What is the National Assembly?

The National Assembly is where elected representatives from all over Pakistan come together. These representatives are chosen by the people of Pakistan through elections. Their main job is to speak for the citizens and help run the country.

What Does the National Assembly Do?

The National Assembly has several important jobs:

  • Making Laws: Its most important job is to create new laws or change old ones. These laws affect everyone in Pakistan.
  • Controlling the Government: The members of the National Assembly watch over the government to make sure it's doing a good job. They can ask questions and hold debates.
  • Approving Budgets: They decide how the government spends money. This includes approving the yearly budget for the country.
  • Electing the Prime Minister: The members of the National Assembly vote to choose the Prime Minister of Pakistan, who is the head of the government.

How Members Are Chosen

Members of the National Assembly are called Members of the National Assembly, or MNAs. They are chosen through general elections held every five years. People aged 18 and above can vote for the person they want to represent them from their area.

How Many Members?

The National Assembly has a certain number of seats for its members. Most of these seats are for members directly elected by the people. There are also special seats reserved for women and for non-Muslim minorities, to make sure different groups are represented.

Who Leads the National Assembly?

The National Assembly is led by a person called the Speaker. The Speaker is elected by the members of the Assembly themselves. The Speaker's job is to make sure meetings run smoothly and fairly. They also represent the Assembly in other countries.

The Speaker's Role

The Speaker makes sure that all members follow the rules during debates. They give members a chance to speak and keep order. If there's a tie in a vote, the Speaker can cast the deciding vote.

Where is the National Assembly Located?

The National Assembly meets in the Parliament House building in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. This building is a very important place where many big decisions for the country are made.
