NAI offers many ways for interpreters to grow their skills.
Training and Certifications
NAI provides training programs. These programs teach people how to share stories about nature and culture in interesting ways. They also offer certifications. This means you can get a special certificate that shows you are a trained and skilled interpreter.
Sharing Knowledge
NAI publishes a magazine called the Journal of Interpretation Research. This magazine shares new ideas and studies about how to interpret things. Experts write articles for it, and other experts review them.
Annual Conference
Every year, NAI holds a big meeting called an annual conference. At this event, interpreters from all over can meet. They share ideas, learn from each other, and make new friends. It's a great chance to improve their skills and connect with others in the field.
How NAI Started
The National Association for Interpretation was formed in 1988. It came about when two older groups decided to join forces.
Joining Two Groups
Before NAI, there were two main organizations for interpreters:
- The Association of Interpretive Naturalists: This group started in 1954.
- The Western Interpreters Association: This group began in 1965.
By merging, these two groups created one stronger organization. This new group could do even more to support people who interpret natural and cultural resources.
