The National Black Sisters' Conference (NBSC) is a special group for Black Catholic religious sisters and nuns in the United States. It was started in Pittsburgh in 1968 by Sister Martin de Porres Grey. She created the NBSC because she was not included in a meeting for Black Catholic clergy earlier that year.
Sister Martin de Porres Grey led the conference until 1974. The NBSC helps Black sisters support each other and work for justice.
Harriet Tubman Award
Each year, the NBSC gives out the Harriet Tubman Award. This award is given during the Black Catholic Joint Conference. This conference brings together Black sisters, priests, brothers, and deacons.
Honoring Advocates for Black People
The Harriet Tubman Award honors a Black sister who works hard to help Black people. They must show great dedication through their ministry. The award is named after Harriet Tubman, a famous American hero. She helped many enslaved people find freedom.
