The National Black Sisters' Conference (NBSC) is a group for Black Catholic religious sisters and nuns in the United States. It started in Pittsburgh in 1968. A woman named Martin de Porres Grey, who was a Mercy Sister at the time, founded it.
She created the NBSC after she was not allowed to join the first meeting of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus earlier that year. Sister Grey led the conference until 1974.
Harriet Tubman Award
Honoring Black Sisters
Each year, the NBSC gives out the Harriet Tubman Award. This award is given to a Black sister. It honors those who work hard to support Black people through their religious service.
The award is presented at the Black Catholic Joint Conference. This conference brings together Black sisters, priests, brothers, and other religious leaders.
