National Congress of Chile facts for kids
The National Congress of Chile (which in Spanish is called Congreso Nacional de Chile) is the part of the government that makes laws for the country of Chile. It's like the main team of lawmakers for the Republic of Chile.
The National Congress of Chile started a long time ago, on July 4, 1811. It is a special kind of law-making body called a bicameral legislature. This means it has two main parts, or "houses," that work together.
What is the Chilean Congress?
The Chilean Congress is made up of two important groups:
- The Chamber of Deputies is like the "lower house." It has 155 members called Deputies. Before 2017, there were 120 Deputies.
- The Senate is the "upper house." It has 50 members called Senators. Before 2017, there were 38 Senators.
How Does a Bicameral System Work?
Having two houses helps make sure that laws are thought about very carefully. Both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate need to agree on a new law before it can become official. This system helps balance different ideas and make sure decisions are fair for everyone in Chile.
