History of the Crittenton Mission
The very first home opened in New York City. Seven years later, in 1890, a second Florence Crittenton Home was established in San Jose, California. Soon after, a pioneering doctor named Kate Waller Barrett joined Charles Crittenton. She became a key leader in the organization.
Expanding the Crittenton Network
Kate Waller Barrett helped the Crittenton movement grow into a large network. At its busiest, there were 76 homes across the United States. There were also homes in other countries like China, France, Japan, and Mexico.
This movement helped change how people thought about helping others. It also changed ideas about the role of women in society. Dr. Barrett believed strongly in educating and training young women. Her ideas were new for the time, but they became a big part of the services offered at many Crittenton homes.
In 1898, a special law was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President McKinley. This law gave the National Florence Crittenton Mission a national charter forever. It was the first time a U.S. national charter was given to a charity. The main office for the national mission was in Washington, D.C.. However, most of its work happened in New York City.
Changes and Mergers Over Time
By 1950, there were two groups connected to the original mission. These were the National Florence Crittenton Mission and the Florence Crittenton Homes Association. The Homes Association had its main office in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1976, the Florence Crittenton Association of America joined with another group called the Child Welfare League of America. The Florence Crittenton Mission continued to provide money to the Crittenton Division of the Child Welfare League.
The National Crittenton Foundation Today
In 2006, the National Florence Crittenton Mission changed its name to The National Crittenton Foundation. The organization became separate from the Child Welfare League of America. It is now a stand-alone organization again.
The National Crittenton Foundation works with many Crittenton-affiliated agencies across the country. Its main office is located in Portland, Oregon. The foundation continues its important work of supporting young people.
