The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is an important part of the Australian Government. It works to help Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people, often called Indigenous Australians. The NIAA makes sure that government plans, programs, and services for Indigenous Australians work well together. It helps create new ideas and deliver support across different government areas.

The NIAA was started in July 2019. It works closely with the Minister for Indigenous Australians, currently Malarndirri McCarthy. The agency is also part of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The first leader of the NIAA was Ray Griggs. Since February 2022, Jody Broun has been the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

How the NIAA Started

The idea for the NIAA was first shared by Prime Minister Scott Morrison in May 2019. This happened after his government was re-elected. He announced some changes to how the government was set up. One big change was making Ken Wyatt the Minister for Indigenous Australians. This role became a very important part of the government's main team, called the Cabinet.

The NIAA was created to take over from a group that used to work within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The official document to create the NIAA was published on May 29, 2019. It officially began its work on July 1, 2019. This was done under a law called the Public Service Act 1999.

What the NIAA Does

The National Indigenous Australians Agency reports to the Minister for Indigenous Australians. It is a special agency that helps the government make decisions. The NIAA's main job is to lead and organize how policies are made. It also designs and carries out programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The agency gives advice to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Indigenous Affairs. This advice helps the whole government work on important issues for Indigenous Australians. The NIAA also helps promote reconciliation. This means bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians closer together. It also works on the Closing the Gap strategy. This strategy aims to improve life outcomes for Indigenous Australians. The NIAA checks how well these programs are working.

How the NIAA is Organized

The NIAA is led by its CEO, Jody Broun. There are also two Deputy CEOs who help lead the agency. Each Deputy CEO has different important jobs.

The NIAA has staff members working all over Australia. Many of its staff, about 41 percent, work outside of Canberra. They are in other big cities and in smaller towns. They also work in remote areas of Australia.
