The National Iranian South Oilfields Company (NISOC) is a large oil company in Iran that is owned by the government. It is part of a bigger company called the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
NISOC was started in 1971 in the city of Masjed Soleyman. Today, its main office is in Ahvaz. The company is Iran's biggest oil producer. It drills for and produces about 3 million barrels of oil every day.
The company works in a huge area of over 400,000 square kilometers. It is responsible for producing about 83% of all the crude oil in Iran. It also produces 17% of the country's natural gas.
NISOC manages some of the world's largest oil fields. This includes the Ahvaz Field, which is the third-largest oil field in the world. The company's main job is to find and bring up oil and gas from under the ground in several provinces in southern Iran.
The Aghajari Oil Field
The Aghajari oil field is a major oil field in Iran's Khuzestan Province. It was first discovered in 1938. The field is owned by the government and operated by NISOC.
This oil field holds a very large amount of oil. Production from this field is centered around 170,000 barrels of oil per day.
Getting More Oil from an Old Field
Over time, it gets harder to get oil out of a field because the pressure underground drops. The Aghajari field is very old, so its production has slowed down.
To solve this, a huge project was started called the Aghajari Gas Injection Project. This project uses a special method to increase the oil field's pressure. It pumps large amounts of natural gas deep into the ground.
This extra pressure helps push more oil up to the surface. Thanks to this project, the field can produce more oil than before. The goal was to increase daily production to 300,000 barrels of oil.
