The National Library in Singapore is a very important place for books and learning. It is also known by its names in other languages: Chinese: 国家图书馆, Malay: Perpustakaan Negara, and Tamil: தேசிய நூலகம். This big, modern building replaced an older library that was on Stamford Road.
The library building has 16 stories and was designed by T.R. Hamzah & Ken Yeang. It is the main office for the National Library Board, which manages all public libraries in Singapore. The new library opened its doors in 2005. It is home to the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library and also the Central Public Library.
