Building the National Monument
Monas was started in August 1959. It was officially opened two years later, on August 17, 1961. The monument was designed by three talented people: Soedarsono, Frederick Silaban, and Ir. Rooseno. Indonesia's first president, Ir. Soekarno, officially opened it. Monas first welcomed visitors on July 12, 1975.
What You Can Do at Monas
Monas is about 132 meters (433 feet) tall. Many people visit to see the amazing view of Jakarta from the top. Inside the monument, there is a special room. This room has dioramas that show important moments in Indonesia's history.
Enjoying the Monas Park
Around the monument, there is a large urban forest. This park covers about 80 hectares (almost 200 acres). It is a great place for people to relax and enjoy nature in the middle of the city. The park offers a fresh green space for everyone.
