  • The East Mount Sterling Historic District is a whole neighborhood with many old buildings. It includes streets like Harrison Avenue and North Queen Street. This district was listed in 1991.
  • The Mount Sterling Commercial District covers the downtown area where many businesses are located. It's at the intersection of U.S. Route 60 and Kentucky Route 11. This district was added in 1980.
  • The Northwest Residential District is another neighborhood with historic homes. It includes many streets like Kentucky Route 1991 and North Maysville Street. It was listed in 1989.

Ancient Mounds

Montgomery County is home to some very old sites built by early people.

  • The Gaitskill Mound Archeological Site is an ancient mound located off Indian Mound Drive. It was listed in 1975. Archeological sites are places where scientists study human history by digging up artifacts.
  • The Wright-Greene Mound Complex is another group of ancient mounds. Its exact location is kept secret to protect the site, but it was added to the list in 1998.

Machpelah Cemetery

The Machpelah Cemetery in Mount Sterling is a historic cemetery. It's located at the eastern edge of Main Street. It was added to the National Register in 1991. Cemeteries can be historic because they hold the graves of important people and often have old monuments and designs.

Confederate Monument

Inside Machpelah Cemetery, there is also the Confederate Monument of Mt. Sterling. This monument honors soldiers from the Civil War. It was listed separately in 1997.

Other Historic Places

  • The Monarch Milling Company is an old mill located at the junction of South Maysville and East Locust streets. Mills were very important for grinding grain into flour. This one was listed in 1991.
