History of Montgomery County
Early Events and Settlers
In 1793, a Native American leader named Shoe Boots (Tarsekayahke) led a raid. This raid involved Cherokee and Shawnee warriors attacking Morgan's Station. This event was known as the last Native American raid in Kentucky.
During the raid, some settlers were killed. Two young girls, including Clarinda Allington, were taken captive. The group then returned to Cherokee territory. Shoe Boots believed he had saved Clarinda's life. He later married her, and they had three children together.
Shoe Boots was a respected and successful leader. Several years later, Clarinda visited her family in Kentucky with her children. She decided to stay there. Her family could not support her, but the state of Kentucky voted to give her money for three years.
County Formation and Naming
Montgomery County was created in 1796. The land for the county came from Clark County. Montgomery was the 22nd county formed in Kentucky.
The county was named to honor Richard Montgomery. He was an American Revolutionary War Brigadier General. He died in 1775 while trying to capture Quebec City, Canada.
Another story says the county was named for Thomas Montgomery from Virginia. He also served in the Revolutionary War. In 1793, Thomas Montgomery settled in Mount Sterling. Later, in 1805, he moved to Gibson County, Indiana.
