Early Growth and Scottish Branches
The National Society for Women's Suffrage quickly grew. Eliza Wigham, Jane Wigham, and Priscilla Bright McLaren were important members. They, along with their friends, set up a branch in Edinburgh, Scotland. Eliza Wigham and her friend Agnes McLaren became the secretaries for this branch.
By 1870, the idea had spread across Scotland. New branches of the society were formed in other cities. These included Aberdeen, Glasgow, St. Andrews, and Galloway. This showed that many people across the country supported women getting the right to vote.
Forming a London Committee
In 1871, a Liberal politician named Jacob Bright had an idea. He thought it would be helpful to have a group in London. This London group could talk directly to members of parliament. They would ask these politicians to support women's right to vote.
This idea was also supported by a petition. Jane Taylour from the Galloway branch and others signed it. Because of this, the Central Committee of the National Society for Women's Suffrage was formed. This new committee had its first meeting on 17 January 1872. It worked to influence lawmakers in the capital city.
Legacy of the Society
The National Society for Women's Suffrage was a very important first step. It laid the groundwork for future groups. Later, two other major organizations continued the fight. These were the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and the Women's Social and Political Union. The work of the National Society for Women's Suffrage helped make it possible for women to finally gain the right to vote.
