History of GeoStat
People in Georgia have been collecting information for a long time. Records show this started as far back as the 1200s! We even have old records from the 1600s and 1700s that counted people in different parts of Georgia.
Early Statistical Work
In 1918, a temporary office was set up. It was called the Statistical Bureau. This bureau helped gather information for farming and land use. Then, in 1919, a bigger group was formed. It was called the Republican Statistical Committee. This committee was in charge of all important national statistics.
Statistics in Modern Georgia
During the time of Soviet rule (1921–1991), a Central Statistics Division handled national data. After Georgia became independent again, different groups took over this job. Finally, in 2004, the statistics department became part of the Ministry of Economy. Then, in 2010, it became an independent agency. This is the GeoStat we know today.
What GeoStat Does (Mission)
GeoStat is the official group responsible for collecting and sharing statistics. They follow international rules to make sure their data is correct.
Main Goals
GeoStat's main goals are to collect, check, store, and share information. They make sure the data is complete, up-to-date, and reliable. This way, people can compare information easily.
Sharing Information
One of GeoStat's key jobs is to provide official statistics to everyone. This includes regular people, government groups, and businesses. They also share information with the news media and schools. All their information is open and easy to find. GeoStat regularly publishes important facts about Georgia's economy and society on its website.
How GeoStat is Organized (Structure)
GeoStat is led by an executive director. This person is chosen by the Prime Minister of Georgia. They serve for four years. The Executive Director also leads the GeoStat Board, which has eight members.
