History of the Theatre
The theatre officially opened on September 1, 1899. However, its story began much earlier with the Christiania Theatre, which started in 1829.
A Grand Opening
The National Theatre had a special three-day opening celebration.
- Day 1: They performed plays by the famous writer Ludvig Holberg.
- Day 2: The audience saw An Enemy of the People, a play by Henrik Ibsen.
- Day 3: The final performance was Sigurd Jorsalfar by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
A Home for Great Plays
For many years, the theatre was a private company and faced money troubles. In 1929, the Norwegian government began to help fund it. Many people believe the theatre's "golden age" started in 1911 with its director, Vilhelm Krag.
The theatre is especially known for performing the plays of Henrik Ibsen, one of Norway's most famous playwrights. It has also been home to a beloved children's Christmas play called Journey to the Christmas Star (Reisen til Julestjernen). This play was written by the theatre's finance director, Sverre Brandt, and was first shown in 1924.
The Building and its Stages
The beautiful theatre building is located in the heart of Oslo. It sits between the Royal Palace and the Parliament of Norway. It was designed by the architect Henrik Bull. Getting to the theatre is easy, as it is served by the National Theatre Station for trains and the National Theatre station for the metro.
The National Theatre organization runs four different stages:
- Hovedscenen (The Main Stage)
- Amfiscenen (The Amphitheatre)
- Malersalen (The Painting Parlour)
- Torshovteatret (The Torshov Theatre), which is in the Torshov neighborhood of Oslo.
