The Nattilik Heritage Centre is a special museum. It is located in Gjoa Haven, a community on King William Island in Nunavut, Canada. This museum helps people learn about the history and culture of the local Inuit people. It shares their stories and traditions.
The Mystery of Franklin's Lost Ships
The Nattilik Heritage Centre is very important for another reason. It is close to where the famous ships of Sir John Franklin were found. Franklin led an expedition a long time ago. He was trying to find a sea route called the Northwest Passage. Sadly, his ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, got lost in the Arctic ice. Everyone on board disappeared.
For many years, people searched for these lost ships. Finally, in recent times, the wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were discovered. They are now part of the Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site.
The Nattilik Heritage Centre plans to grow. It wants to include more about Franklin's lost expedition. This means showing items found from the shipwrecks. This is happening because of an agreement with the Inuit people. This agreement is called an Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement. It is based on the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. This agreement makes sure that the Inuit people have a say in what happens to historical sites and items found on their land in Nunavut.
It is interesting that the heritage centre opened on October 17. This date is also the birthday of Captain Francis Crozier. He was the commander of HMS Terror, one of Franklin's lost ships.
