Exploring Franklin's Lost Expedition
The Nattilik Heritage Centre is very close to an important historical site. This site is where the famous ships of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition were found. These ships were called HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.
Sir John Franklin was a British explorer who tried to find the Northwest Passage in the Arctic. His expedition, which started in 1845, disappeared. For many years, no one knew what happened to his ships or crew.
The Discovery of the Ships
In recent years, the wrecks of the Erebus and Terror were discovered. This was a huge find for history and archaeology. The Nattilik Heritage Centre is the closest Inuit community to these shipwrecks.
Future Plans for the Centre
Because of its location, there are plans to make the Nattilik Heritage Centre even bigger. The idea is to add exhibits about Franklin's lost expedition. This would include artifacts found from the wrecks of the Erebus and Terror.
This expansion is part of an agreement with the Inuit people. It's called the Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement. This agreement is based on the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. It ensures that the Inuit have ownership of important archaeological sites and artifacts found in Nunavut. This way, the local community benefits from these historical discoveries.
