Nautilus Book Awards facts for kids
Nautilus Book Awards is a special prize given to books that are all about making the world a better place. These books focus on ideas like social justice (which means fairness for all people) and environmental justice (which means protecting our planet and making sure everyone has a healthy environment).
The awards started in the United States in 1998. They even come with prize money! The main goal of the Nautilus Book Awards is to celebrate books that "make a difference and inspire" readers. The award is named after the nautilus shell, which is a symbol of wisdom and how things grow and develop over time.
How Winners Are Chosen
Each year, the Nautilus Book Awards usually give out one gold award and one or more silver awards. There are many different categories for books. There are 24 categories for adult books and 4 categories specifically for children's and young adult books.
Choosing the winners happens in three main steps. A group of smart people helps decide, including editors, professors, writers, librarians, publishers, schoolteachers, and bookstore owners. For a book to win an award, everyone involved in these three steps must agree. Sometimes, if the judges can't agree, no award might be given in a certain category. It's also possible for one book to win more than one award!
