Nauvoo is a small, unincorporated community located in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place with a name but no separate local government like a town or city.

History of Nauvoo

Nauvoo was first settled in 1844. It was founded by a group of people called Mormons. An important Mormon leader named D.W. Canfield lived there.

Back then, Nauvoo was a busy little place. It had two stores, a post office, a hotel, and a church. There was also a grist-mill (for grinding grain) and a saw-mill (for cutting wood). The community also had a school, a blacksmith shop, and a wagon shop. About 25 homes were in Nauvoo at that time.

Before Nauvoo was officially founded, in 1840, a person named Horace Fellows started making woolen clothes and fabrics there. He later sold his machines to the community of Nauvoo.

The name Nauvoo comes from the Hebrew language. It means "beautiful" or "a place of rest and beauty."

Where is Nauvoo?

Nauvoo is located right on the border between two areas called townships: Liberty Township and Morris Township. Both of these are within Tioga County.

Past Post Offices

In 1883, there were four different post offices in the area around Nauvoo. This shows that the community was important for sending and receiving mail in the past.
