About Nava Macmel-Atir

Nava Macmel-Atir was born in Ramat Gan, a city in Israel.

Nava's Writing Journey

Nava Macmel-Atir started her writing career when she was in her twenties. She wrote poems for a children's section in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper. In 1990, on Israel's Memorial Day, a special newspaper section featured an interview with her. This was about her poem "Micha Shuv," which she wrote to remember Micha Granit. He was a soldier who died in the Yom Kippur War.

Early Books and Awards

In 2000, Nava published her first book, Ayelet Diving. One of her most famous books is Adi's Jewel. This story is based on the real experiences of someone who survived the Holocaust. Nava later turned this book into a play.

Adi's Jewel received a special award called the Ze'ev Prize. It also came in third place on the Israeli Ministry of Education's list of top children's books. The Israeli Book Publishers Association also recognized it.

Stories from Real Life

In 2004, Nava published King of the Mountain. She wrote this book to mark 100 years since Theodor Herzl's death. This story is also based on a true event. It tells about a former classmate of Nava's who died in a helicopter accident. This book was also later made into a play.

In 2005, Nava won the Ze'ev Prize again for her book Right of Passage. Many of her books, including Adi's Jewel, The Final Delay, King of the Mountain, and Right of Passage, were very popular. They all ranked high on the Israeli Ministry of Education's national children's book chart. These books were also turned into theater shows.

Teaching and Workshops

For over ten years, until 2005, Nava Macmel-Atir taught literature at Blich High School in Ramat Gan. Today, she leads writing workshops for young people. These workshops take place at the Beit Ariela Library in Tel Aviv.

Bestselling Novels

In 2006, her book The Girl From the Opposite Balcony was published. This book was also adapted into a play. Nava even acted in one of the parts herself.

Her second novel for adults, Ot me-Avshalom, came out in 2009. It quickly became a bestseller. Nava received the Golden Book Prize because it sold 20,000 copies in just three months. Six months after it was released, Ot me-Avshalom won the Platinum Book Prize for selling 40,000 copies. In 2010, Lady Globes magazine named Nava one of the Top 50 Most Influential Women. By June 2015, Ot me-Avshalom had sold 100,000 copies, earning the Diamond Book Prize.
