Navarretia pubescens is a type of flowering plant often called the downy pincushionplant. It belongs to the phlox family. This plant is native to the central mountains and Central Valley of California, and also to southern Oregon. You can find it growing in areas like chaparral and oak woodlands.

What is the Downy Pincushionplant?

The downy pincushionplant is a small, hairy plant that lives for only one year. It grows a reddish or brownish stem that can reach up to about 33 centimeters (about 13 inches) tall. Its leaves are divided into many thin, needle-like parts. The leaves near the top of the plant are usually hairy, while the lower ones are smoother.

The flowers of this plant grow in a tight cluster. These clusters are surrounded by special leaf-like parts called bracts and are covered in soft, fuzzy hairs. Each flower is small, just over a centimeter long, and is blue with a purplish center.
