A Look Back at Nazareth
The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth
In 1822, Nazareth became the new home for a special group of women called the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. They were founded in 1812, and their main home, called a motherhouse, is still there today. The Sisters ran a school in Nazareth called Nazareth Academy. Later, this school became Nazareth College. They operated the college until 1971.
The person who helped start the Sisters, John Baptist Mary David, passed away in Nazareth in 1841. He is buried in the cemetery at the convent, which is where the Sisters live.
Post Office and Railroad
Nazareth had a post office for a short time in 1863. It then reopened in 1888 and is still working today. The area was also a stop on the Louisville and Bardstown Railroad. This railroad is now known as the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
