Nazareth Newton facts for kids

Nazareth Newton (died 1583) was an important person at the royal court in England. She served Queen Elizabeth I as a lady-in-waiting.
Nazareth was the youngest daughter of Sir John Newton and Margaret Poyntz. Her family lived at Eastwood, a house built from stones of an old castle called Richmont. Her sister, Frances Newton, also worked for the Queen. Frances was a "lady of the bedchamber," which was a very close helper to the Queen. Nazareth herself was a "chamberer," another role helping the Queen in her private rooms during the 1560s.
Nazareth Newton's Marriages
Nazareth Newton was married twice. Both of her marriages connected her to important families in England.
First Marriage to Sir Thomas Southwell
Nazareth Newton became the third wife of Sir Thomas Southwell of Woodrising, Norfolk. They had a daughter named Elizabeth Southwell. Elizabeth also served Queen Elizabeth as a Maid of Honour.
After Sir Thomas Southwell died, Nazareth received some properties. These properties had been taken from a London merchant named John Eliot.
Second Marriage to Lord Paget
After Sir Thomas Southwell's death, Nazareth married Thomas Paget, 3rd Baron Paget. He was the second son of a very important nobleman, William Paget, 1st Baron Paget. Nazareth and Lord Paget had a son together, who was named William Paget, 4th Baron Paget.
Their marriage had some difficulties. In 1573, Lord Paget fired Nazareth's servants. A nobleman named Gilbert Talbot wrote that Lord Paget was not a good husband. He even hired one of Nazareth's former servants, Margaret Butler, to work for his own wife. Because of these problems, Nazareth and Lord Paget formally separated in 1582. Lady Paget continued to live at Woodrising until she passed away in 1583.
