Nebo is a small community in eastern McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistics. In 2020, about 1,790 people lived there.
History of Nebo
Nebo got its name from a special outdoor church camp for Methodists that existed before the American Civil War. When the Western North Carolina Railroad built a train station nearby, they decided to name it Nebo after this camp. The community officially became a town in 1909, but its town status was removed in 1943.
Fun Things to Do in Nebo
The main attraction in Nebo is Lake James. This large lake is a great place for outdoor activities. You can visit Lake James State Park, which is located on the southern side of the lake. It's perfect for hiking, camping, and enjoying nature.
Schools in Nebo
Nebo Elementary School is located right in the community. This school teaches children from kindergarten up to fifth grade. For many years, Nebo had a "junior high" system, which was a bit different from most schools. However, in the 2015–2016 school year, it changed to the standard middle school model. Before it was an elementary school, Nebo used to be a high school. Part of the old high school building burned down a long time ago, but the lunchroom building is still there.
Where is Nebo Located?
The main part of Nebo is generally thought to be around the Nebo post office, which has the ZIP code 28761. However, Nebo has grown over time, especially with new buildings near Lake James. Because of this, some people who live just inside Burke County might also feel like they are part of Nebo. But most people in Nebo believe the community's true boundary is where the Nebo Volunteer Fire Department protects.
