Needs Convenience, or simply Needs, is a group of handy shops found all over Atlantic Canada. These shops are like mini-supermarkets where you can quickly grab snacks, drinks, and other everyday items.
The company Sobeys owns the Needs brand and its logo. Each Needs store is run by a different person or group, called a franchisee. Think of it like a special agreement where they get to use the Needs name and sell its products. Sobeys is the main company that supplies all the products to these stores.
Many Needs stores are open from 6 AM until midnight. However, in bigger cities, you can find some Needs locations that are open 24 hours a day. Some Needs shops also have gasoline stations. These gas stations might use brands like Ultramar, Shell, or Sobeys Fast Fuels.
The Story of Needs Convenience
The Needs Convenience chain grew over time through several smaller businesses that Sobeys bought. This started with a company called TRA wholesale in Middleton, Nova Scotia. By the mid-1990s, Needs stores began to appear across Atlantic Canada.
Sobeys also owned another chain of stores called Green Gables. In the late 1990s, these Green Gables stores were changed into Needs stores. This was part of a plan to bring together the different convenience stores in the region under one main brand.
In the early 2000s, Sobeys tried something new. They changed a few Needs stores into a different brand called Sobeys Express. This was a test to see if the new brand would work. However, the test was not successful, and those stores eventually went back to being Needs stores. Today, some Needs stores are called Needs Convenience Extra or Needs Convenience Plus.
