The Neillsville Standpipe is a tall, important water tower located in Neillsville, Wisconsin. It helps make sure homes and businesses in the town have clean water with good pressure.

What is a Standpipe?

A standpipe is a special type of water tower. It's a very tall, narrow tank that holds a large amount of water. This water is stored high up to create pressure. When water is stored at a high point, gravity helps push it down through pipes to homes and buildings. This means you get good water pressure when you turn on your faucet!

Standpipes are often built in places where the ground is already high. This helps them store water even higher, which is great for water pressure. They are a key part of a town's water system.

Building the Neillsville Standpipe

The Neillsville Standpipe was built in 1926. It stands on the highest point in Neillsville. This helps it do its job of providing water pressure very well.

The standpipe has two main parts. Inside, there is a large steel water tank. This tank was made by a company called the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Co.. Around the steel tank, there is a strong concrete tower. This tower is about 95 feet tall. It was built by Tierweiler Bros. from Marshfield. They used a special building method called "slip-form" construction. This means they poured concrete into a moving mold that slowly went up as the concrete dried. This made the tower very strong and seamless.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its age and how it was built, the Neillsville Standpipe is considered a historic building. It shows how towns used to build their water systems.

In 2012, the standpipe was added to the State Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in Wisconsin. The next year, in 2013, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places across the entire United States that are important to history. Being on these lists helps protect the standpipe so future generations can learn about it.
