Nelson's Ice Cream
Nelson's Ice Cream in Stillwater, Minnesota

Nelson's Ice Cream is a super popular ice cream shop in Stillwater, Minnesota. Stillwater is a fun town for tourists, located right by the St. Croix River. This famous spot first opened its doors way back in 1923.

A Sweet History

Nelson's began as a grocery store called Seven Corners in the 1920s. A man named John Lustig owned it. Besides selling groceries, he also sold Supreme ice cream. In the 1930s, Lustig made the store bigger. He passed away in 1947.

New Owners, New Name

After John Lustig, Art Nelson took over the store. He lived right on the property. Many people in Stillwater still call the place Art's because of him! The Nelson family also owned another ice cream business called Brown's Ice Cream in Minneapolis.

When Art Nelson passed away in 1964, his nephew Wade bought the store. Wade kept the business going strong. In the 1960s, he started selling the huge ice cream cones that Nelson's is famous for today! Eventually, the store's name changed to Nelson's Dairy Store.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

In 1992, Bob Pasket and Chuck Kummeth bought the store. They continued the tradition of serving giant ice cream portions. Then, in 2006, two people from Stillwater, Dave Najarian and Bill Bergstrom, bought Nelson's. Dave Najarian is still running the store today.

Nelson's Today

Nelson's Ice Cream is open every year from April to October. They offer many different ice cream flavors. Some fun names include Pirate's Booty, Snowflake, and Rocky Road. The ice cream they sell comes from "Brown's Ice Cream," which was once owned by the Nelson family.

Famous for Big Portions

Because Nelson's started as a grocery store, it has a small indoor space. There are no seats inside, but you can find picnic tables outside. Nelson's is still known for its massive ice cream portions. The biggest one is called the Lumberjack. It has five scoops of ice cream and lots of toppings! Inside the store, there's a wall with pictures of people who managed to finish the whole Lumberjack.
