Nelson was a small community located in Durham County, North Carolina, in the United States. It was once a lively farming area, known for its tobacco and livestock farms. The community was very close-knit and family-oriented.

Nelson was centered around the meeting point of Miami Boulevard and North Carolina Highway 54. Today, much of what was Nelson has changed. The growth of the Research Triangle Park has covered many of the old farms. Most of the original farmhouses and barns are gone. A few older small homes and the Cedar Fork Baptist Church still stand. However, the community as it once was no longer exists.

The History of Nelson

Early Settlement

People from England first settled in the area that became Nelson around 1773. The community was originally known as Cedar Fork. It grew up around the Cedar Fork Baptist Church, which was founded in 1805.

Post Offices and Railroads

From 1860 to 1866, a post office operated in Cedar Fork. Later, in 1882, another post office opened under the name Llewellyn. In the 1880s, a small train station was built along the North Carolina Railroad line. The post office was then reopened in 1885 and named Nelson. However, the Nelson post office closed in April 1915.

Modern Changes

By 2010, the original Nelson community had been largely taken over by new buildings and businesses. This growth was mainly due to the expansion of the Research Triangle Park. This area is now a major center for technology and research.
