Nelson Island is a cool island located near the bottom of the world, in Antarctica. It's part of a group of islands called the South Shetland Islands. This island is about 22 kilometers (12 nautical miles) long and 13 kilometers (7 nautical miles) wide. It sits southwest of a much bigger island called King George Island.
People have known about Nelson Island for a long time. Its name, Nelson Island, has been used since at least 1821. Before that, it had a few other names like Leipzig Island, O'Cain's Island, and Strachans Island.
Eco-Nelson Station: A Research Hub
Even though Nelson Island is in a very remote place, it's home to a special place called the Eco-Nelson Station. This is a private research station where scientists and explorers come to study the Antarctic environment.
The Eco-Nelson Station was started in 1988 by a Czech explorer named Jaroslav Pavlíček. It's a unique place because it welcomes researchers from all over the world. This means it's not just a station for one country, but a place where people from different backgrounds can work together on important scientific projects.
