The Nelson Mandela Park is a welcoming public park located in Leicester, England. You can find it right inside the city centre, close to the exciting Leicester Tigers' Stadium. Discover Nelson Mandela Park in Leicester

Nelson Mandela Park is a special green space in the heart of Leicester. It offers a place for everyone to relax, play, and enjoy the outdoors. The park's renaming was a tribute to a global hero, making it more than just a park; it's a symbol of hope and unity.

What Can You Do at the Park?

This park has many features for visitors of all ages. Whether you want to play, exercise, or just enjoy some fresh air, Nelson Mandela Park has something for you.

Fun Features for Everyone

For younger visitors, there is a fun children's play area. It's a great spot for kids to run around and make new friends. The park also has bright flood-lighting, which helps keep it safe and usable even after sunset. Public toilets are available for convenience.

In March 2017, new outdoor gym equipment was added to the park. You can find it right across from the children's play area. This equipment is similar to what you might see in other parks, like Victoria Park, Leicester. It gives everyone a chance to get some exercise outdoors.

Many local sports clubs use the park's green spaces for their practice sessions. Before they became a fully professional team, the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club also used this area for training. It shows how important this park is to the community's sports activities.

Celebrating Nelson Mandela's Legacy

The park's name honors Nelson Mandela, a truly inspiring leader. To celebrate this connection, a special event was held many years ago.

The 2007 Sports Festival

On Friday, August 1, 2007, the local council organized the "Nelson Mandela Sports Festival." This event celebrated 21 years since the park was first named after Nelson Mandela. Important community leaders, including the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Gary Glendon Hunt, attended the festival.

During the event, 21 trees were planted. Each tree represented one year the park had carried Nelson Mandela's name. They also symbolized the 21 different wards, or areas, of Leicester. The entire festival was filmed. The recording was then sent to Nelson Mandela himself, so he could see the wonderful celebration in his honor.
