Nelson Beasley Vails, born on October 13, 1960, is a famous American cyclist. He used to race both on roads and special tracks. Nelson made history at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He was the first African American to win an Olympic medal in cycling! He earned a silver medal in the sprint race, finishing just behind his teammate, Mark Gorski.
Nelson was also known by his cool nickname, "The Cheetah." Before becoming a professional cyclist, he worked as a bicycle messenger in New York City. He even appeared as a bicycle messenger in the movie Quicksilver. After his amazing cycling career, Nelson became a commentator for big TV sports events. He also helps with programs that teach people about bicycle safety. In 2009, Nelson Vails was honored by being added to the US Bicycle Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was also inducted into the Lehigh Valley Velodrome Cycling Hall of Fame.
