Nenno is a small, unincorporated community in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government, but rather a group of homes and businesses located within the larger town of Addison.

Exploring Nenno's Past

Nenno has a rich history, especially because of its location on an important old road.

The Famous Yellowstone Trail

Nenno is located right on the old Yellowstone Trail. This was one of the very first highways that stretched across the entire United States! Imagine a road that went from coast to coast, long before modern interstates existed. The Yellowstone Trail helped people travel and explore the country in the early 1900s.

Roads Through Time

The main north-south road that runs through Nenno has changed its name many times. Today, it's known as Wisconsin Highway 175. But in the past, it was called Highway 41, and even earlier, it was Highway 15. These changes show how roads and transportation have evolved over the years.

Historic Buildings in Nenno

If you visit Nenno, you can still see some very old buildings that tell stories of the past.

The Old Hotel and Store

On the east side of the main road, across from where an old church used to be, stands a building from around 1870. This building was once a busy place! It served as a hotel, a general store, and more. Travelers on the Yellowstone Trail might have stopped here for a place to rest or to buy supplies.

The Horse Stable

Just north of the old hotel, there's an old shed. It opens to the south and was used as a stable for horses. In the days before cars, horses were the main way to travel. This stable would have been a crucial spot for people to keep their horses safe and rested.

Who Was Nicholas Nenno?

The community of Nenno was named after a man called Nicholas "Nick" Nenno. He was an immigrant from Prussia, which is a historical region in Europe. Nicholas Nenno arrived in the area in 1833. He was an important figure in the early community. He ran a hotel, a general store, and even a brewery!

Nenno's First Post Office

The first post office in Nenno opened its doors in June 1857. The very first Postmaster, who was in charge of the mail, was a man named George Smith. Having a post office was a big deal for the community, as it connected them to the rest of the world.
