Neper (mythology) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Neper was an important ancient Egyptian god. He was known as the god of grains. This included important crops like wheat, corn, and barley. His name meant "lord of the mouth," which showed he was in charge of food. Neper also represented food itself and keeping people healthy.

He decided when crops would grow, when they were ready to be picked, and when they disappeared. People worshipped him because he was the god who made sure they had enough food to stay strong and healthy.

What Neper Looked Like

Neper was usually shown as a human. But he had special signs to show he was connected to grains. His clothes often had dots on them, like corn kernels. He also had grains above his head, as you might see in old pictures. Neper was often shown carrying wheat or other crops. He wore simple clothes, usually just a cloth around his waist. People worshipped Neper all over Egypt.

Neper's Family and Connections

Neper had a female version of himself named Nepit. She was the goddess of grain. Neper's mother was Renenutet. She was a goddess of food, harvesting, and also represented grains.

Neper was also seen as a form of Osiris. Osiris was the god of death and the underworld. People thought Neper was like Osiris because he appeared when crops grew and disappeared after harvest. This was similar to how Osiris came back from the dead. Both Neper and Osiris were often called the god who was "Living after he had died."
