Scientific classification |
The Nephrurus amyae, also called the centralian rough knob-tailed gecko, is a special type of gecko. It's the biggest gecko in its group, called Nephrurus. Like all geckos in this group, it lives only in Australia. This means it's endemic to Australia, found nowhere else in the world!
Why is it Called Amyae?
This gecko's scientific name, amyae, was given to honor Amy Couper. She is the daughter of Patrick J. Couper, an Australian scientist who studies reptiles and amphibians (called a herpetologist). It's a way to remember and thank people who help discover and name new animals!
Where Does it Live?
The Nephrurus amyae gecko mostly lives in the middle parts of Australia. You can find it in the dry, central areas of the country.
What Does it Look Like?
The Nephrurus amyae gecko usually has a brown or reddish color. It has a small tail with a special "knob" right at the end. This knob is one of its unique features!
