Early Life
Nerijus Numavičius was born in Šilalė, Lithuania, on May 12, 1967. He was the oldest of six children, with three brothers and three sisters. His family later moved to a place called Šilagalys, which is near Panevėžys.
He went to Panevėžio Žemynos progimnazija for school. Later, in 2001, he earned a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Medicine at Vilnius University. He studied public health there.
Building a Business
Nerijus Numa started his business journey by selling real estate in Lithuania. He then used the money he earned to invest in different company stocks.
Starting Small
In 1992, he teamed up with his friends and two brothers. They started a small retail company in Vilnius called Urdzia. This was their first step into the world of business.
Growing Vilniaus prekyba
By 1994, Nerijus and eight other partners created Vilniaus prekyba. They brought together seven different retail stores to form this new company.
The company grew a lot by selling stocks they had bought. These stocks came from companies that used to be owned by the government. For example, they sold stocks from four sugar factories to a Danish company called Danisco. This deal was worth about 30 million US dollars. This money helped them grow their retail business even more.
They also invested in other companies. These included a poultry farm, a mineral water company, a meat packing company, and a bakery.
The Birth of Maxima Group
In 1998, they opened a new, larger store. It was about 3,000 square meters in size. This was when the Maxima Group brand officially began. Maxima Group became a very important part of their retail business.
