The main character, Annemarie Braun, is a doctor's daughter from Berlin. She is described as a slim, blonde, and very German girl.

This story happens between 1922 and 1923. Annemarie decides to study in Tübingen with her friends, Ilse and Marlene. Annemarie wants to study medicine. She hopes to become her father's assistant. Her father agrees to her studying in Tübingen. But only if she continues her training in Berlin later. Her Aunt Albertina does not think a young girl should leave home alone.

On their way, Annemarie misses a train in Würzburg. She gets separated from Ilse and Marlene. But she meets a young doctor named Rudolf Hartenstein. He likes her right away.

When Annemarie finally gets to Tübingen, she lives with Ilse and Marlene. They stay with a couple, Nepomuk and Veronika Kirchmäuser, and their children. The girls become friends with other students. They form a "Swabian hiking group." This idea comes from the Wandervogel movement. This was a popular youth movement in the early 1900s. It encouraged hiking and being outdoors.

At a party, Annemarie meets Rudolf Hartenstein again. She also meets his sister, Ola.

Annemarie's Love Story

Over time, Annemarie and Rudolf fall in love. They tell each other how they feel in a dramatic moment. This happens in a foggy cave called the Nebelhöhle. Annemarie almost falls into a deep hole. Rudolf quickly grabs her and saves her.

Later, at the Ulmer Münster cathedral, Rudolf asks Annemarie to marry him. She says no at first. This is because she promised her father she would be his assistant.

In the summer, Annemarie goes back to Berlin. She starts working in a clinic there. Rudolf Hartenstein is also in Berlin. He works as a doctor in the same hospital. He is Annemarie’s boss, which causes some tension between them.

They meet again during a storm in the Charlottenburg Palace Park. Rudolf asks Annemarie to marry him once more. This time, Annemarie agrees. The two of them get married. Annemarie's brother, Hans, also marries Rudolf's sister, Ola, at the same time.

In the first version of the book, there is a small hint about World War I. Annemarie sees Burg Hohenzollern from a train window. The book says it "stands proudly and suspects nothing of the sudden changes to the royal family."

Some versions of the book have an extra chapter. This part describes Annemarie’s future. It says she becomes a mother to a daughter named Vronli.

Else Ury, 1915

Else Ury was a German writer. She wrote many children's books. She was born on November 1, 1877, in Berlin. She died on January 13, 1943, during World War II.

Her most famous character is Annemarie Braun. Annemarie is a blonde doctor's daughter. Her life from childhood to old age is told in the ten Nesthäkchen books. These books were very popular. A TV series called Nesthäkchen was made in 1983. It was based on the first three books. Millions of people have read the books and watched the TV show.

What Kind of Book Is It?

The Nesthäkchen books belong to a German book type called Backfischroman. This means "girls' novel." These books were for readers aged 12 to 16. They told stories about girls growing up. A "Backfisch" was a young girl, usually between 14 and 17 years old.

Backfischroman novels were popular from about 1850 to 1950. They often showed girls learning about society's rules. The stories usually ended with the main character getting married. She would then become a Hausfrau, which means a homemaker.

Besides Else Ury, other successful Backfischroman authors included Magda Trott and Emmy von Rhoden. Emmy von Rhoden wrote Der Trotzkopf. Henny Koch was another famous author in this style.

Else Ury first planned to end the Nesthäkchen series with this book, volume 6. It described Annemarie's marriage. But her publisher, Meidingers Jugendschriften Verlag, received many letters. Young fans begged for more Nesthäkchen stories. After thinking about it, Ury wrote four more books. She even mentioned her doubts about continuing the series in the seventh book, Nesthäkchen and Her Chicks.
