The Nevis Tiger Muskie is a giant sculpture found in Nevis, Minnesota. It's a famous landmark that looks like a huge fish!

This amazing sculpture is known as the world's largest tiger muskie. It shows a tiger muskellunge, which is a type of fish that eats other fish and lives in the local lakes. The sculpture is super long, measuring 30 feet and 6 inches! It's made from cedar and redwood, and then covered with cement scales to make it look like a real fish.

Why Was the Nevis Tiger Muskie Built?

The Nevis Tiger Muskie was created in 1949. The Nevis Civic & Commerce Chamber, a group that helps local businesses and tourism, built it. They wanted to attract more visitors to Nevis, just like other towns in Minnesota had built their own big fish statues.

A Special Dedication

On August 22, 1950, a very important person came to Nevis. Minnesota's governor, Luther Youngdahl, officially dedicated the sculpture. A governor is the leader of a state, similar to a president for a country. He dedicated it to all the tourists who visit Minnesota.

A Home for the Muskie

In 1991, a special awning was built over the fish. This helps protect it from the weather, like rain or snow. The sculpture now stands in front of a pavilion. This area has picnic tables and even a small playground, making it a great spot for families to stop.

The Nevis Tiger Muskie and its pavilion are located right on the Paul Bunyan State Trail. This trail is popular for biking and walking. The sculpture is a well-known tourist spot. It's perfect for taking fun photos and helps people easily find their way around the small town of Nevis.

Nevis School Mascot

In September 2012, Nevis Public School thought about changing their school mascot. They considered going back to their original mascot, the "Tiger Muskies," instead of just "Tigers." It shows how important this fish is to the town!

Nevis Muskie Days

The giant fish even has a festival named after it! Every July, Nevis holds its annual "Nevis Muskie Days." This celebration has been happening since 1950. The event is a lot of fun and includes:

  • The Muskie 5K run, where people can race.
  • A street dance, where everyone can enjoy music and dancing.
  • Many different vendors selling food and other items.
