Nevryo facts for kids
Nevryo (sometimes called Neureo) is a yummy Indian sweet treat. It's a type of dumpling that's very popular in the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi areas of Karnataka, and also in Goa. People often make Nevryo just before Christmas. It's also a special dish prepared during big Hindu festivals like Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi.
What is Nevryo Made Of?
Nevryo has two main parts: the outer dough and the sweet filling inside.
The Dough
The dough is made from a few simple ingredients:
- Refined flour
- Semolina (a type of coarse wheat flour)
- Clarified butter, also known as ghee (a rich, buttery oil)
- Water
The Filling
The sweet filling is a mix of delicious ingredients:
- Grated coconut
- Sugar
- Poppy seeds
- Green cardamom (a spice that adds a lovely smell and taste)
- Almonds or cashew nuts
How Nevryo is Made
Making Nevryo is a fun process that turns simple ingredients into a delightful dessert.
First, the dough is rolled out into thin, round shapes. Then, the sweet filling (made by mixing all the filling ingredients) is placed onto one side of the rolled dough.
Next, the dough is folded in half over the filling. This creates a half-moon shape. A special cutter is used to trim the edges, giving the Nevryo its pretty, crimped look.
Finally, these half-moon dumplings are carefully placed into hot oil and fried. They cook until they turn a beautiful golden-brown color. Nevryo is often compared to another Indian sweet called gujia, which is also a dumpling filled with jaggery (a type of unrefined sugar) and coconut.
