The New Albury Hotel is a special building in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. It's a heritage-listed Australian pub, which means it's an important historical site. It was designed by W. H. Merritt and built in 1939. This building is also sometimes called the Hotel Albury. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999 because of its unique style and history.

A Look Back in Time

Building a Landmark

The New Albury Hotel was designed in 1939 by an architect and engineer named W. H. Merritt from Melbourne. It was built for a company called Richmond N. S. Brewing Company. When it first opened, it was known as the Hotel Albury. Later on, its name changed to the New Albury Hotel. The construction company, Snider Constructions, built it. The project cost about 25,000 pounds at the time.

What the Hotel Looks Like

Unique Design Features

The New Albury Hotel is a five-storey building. This means it has five floors! The front and sides are covered in cream-coloured bricks. The back of the building uses red bricks.

The front of the hotel, called the façade, has a cool feature. It has a verandah that sticks out over the street. Above this, there are concrete balconies with a smooth white finish.

Original Style

The building is in great shape and still looks much like it did when it was first built. Some important details are its rounded corner windows. Also, the balconies and cream brick sections create a horizontal striped look. The only new parts are some metal fire stairs that were added for safety.

Why It's Special

A Rare Architectural Style

The New Albury Hotel was built in 1939. It's a fantastic example of the "international style" of architecture. This style was influenced by a design school called Bauhaus. Buildings like this are common in big cities. However, they are very rare to find in smaller country towns like Albury. This makes the New Albury Hotel very special and unique for its location.

Albury's First "High-Rise"

At five stories tall, the New Albury Hotel was the first "high-rise" building in Albury. This means it really stood out in the town's skyline. Because of its importance, the heritage listing says it should always remain a dominant building in the area.

Why It's Heritage Listed

The New Albury Hotel was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. It met certain requirements to be listed:

  • It shows great design and creative skill in New South Wales.

* Being five stories high, it was the first "high-rise" building in Albury. It really stands out in the street.

  • It has rare or uncommon features in the history of New South Wales.

* Similar buildings, inspired by the Bauhaus style, are found in capital cities. But they are very rare in country towns. This building is important because it's a rare example of this style outside of big cities.
