A Thames Clipper passing New Caledonian Wharf

New Caledonian Wharf is a special housing area in Rotherhithe, London, right by the River Thames. It used to be a busy commercial dock called Redriff Wharf until the 1970s. This area was once part of the larger Surrey Docks.

History of New Caledonian Wharf

From Busy Docks to Homes

The area now known as New Caledonian Wharf was first called Redriff Wharf. It was a very active place where ships would load and unload goods. This continued until the late 1970s. The wharf was next to Greenland Dock and was part of the big Surrey Docks system. It was special because ships could reach it directly from the River Thames.

New Life for the Wharf

After many years, the wharf became old and wasn't used much. It started to fall apart. In 1989, a company called Rosehaugh bought the land. They worked with architects from Shepheard Epstein Hunter to give the area a new purpose. They built 104 modern homes, called flats, on the site.

What's Inside New Caledonian Wharf?

The buildings at New Caledonian Wharf are designed around a large central courtyard. This courtyard even has a fountain! People who live there can use a private gym and a swimming pool. These facilities are just for the residents and their visitors. The wharf also has staff available 24 hours a day to help with things like security and deliveries. Many of the homes have balconies that look out over the River Thames. From these balconies, residents can see amazing views, stretching all the way from Greenwich to Canary Wharf.
