A Look at Plasencia Cathedral's History
The Cathedral of Plasencia is actually made up of two main buildings. There's an older part, called the Old Cathedral (Catedral Vieja). This part was built a long time ago, starting in the 13th century. It was mostly built in the Romanesque style, which is a very old way of building with thick walls and round arches.
Building the New Cathedral
Later, in the 15th century, people started building the New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva). This newer part was built in the Gothic style. Gothic buildings often have very high ceilings and pointed arches, making them look grand and tall.
Art and Features Inside
Inside the New Cathedral, you'll find amazing artworks. The main retablo, which is a large decorative screen behind the altar, was built in the 17th century. A famous artist named Gregorio Fernández carved it. Another artist, Francisco Ricci, painted it with beautiful colors. The cathedral also has finely carved wooden choirs.
