The New England Quilt Museum is a special place in Lowell, Massachusetts. It opened in 1987 and is the only museum in the Northeastern United States completely focused on the art of quilting. Quilting is a craft where people sew layers of fabric together to make beautiful blankets or wall hangings. This museum is actually the second-oldest quilt museum in the whole country!

At the museum, you can see many different quilts. They have both special shows and quilts that are always on display. There's also a library where you can learn more, a shop to buy souvenirs, and classrooms for learning how to quilt. The museum has a great collection of quilts from the 1800s, especially those made in the New England area.

Museum History

The New England Quilt Museum first opened its doors in 1987. It was started by people who loved making quilts themselves. From the very beginning, the museum wanted to show all kinds of quilts. This includes both traditional quilts, which follow old patterns, and modern art quilts. They offer classes and exhibits that explore both new and old ways of working with fabric.

Moving to a New Home

In 1994, the museum moved to its current location. This happened after a flood damaged their old building. The new home is a historic building called the Lowell Institute for Savings. This new space gave the museum much more room. They could have bigger exhibits and better places to store and prepare their quilt collection. There was also more space for classrooms, the museum shop, and special events.

The museum's location is also very interesting. It's close to the Lowell National Historical Park. This park teaches visitors about Lowell's important role in the 1800s. Lowell was a big center for making textiles (fabrics) during the Industrial Revolution in the United States. This makes the quilt museum a perfect fit for the area!

Fun Activities and Projects

The New England Quilt Museum has been involved in many exciting activities over the years. These activities help people learn about and enjoy quilting.

Lowell Quilt Festival

In 2000, the museum started the Lowell Quilt Festival. This was a big event that grew to include many partners across the city and region. A famous quilt show called IMAGES was also part of this festival. IMAGES began in 1983 and featured amazing quilts from all over the United States and Canada. The Lowell Quilt Festival was held for the last time in 2014.

MassQuilts Project

The museum also hosts a special project called MassQuilts. This is a group of volunteers who work to record the history of quilts in Massachusetts. They hold meetings at the museum on the second Thursday of every month. The MassQuilts organization started in 1994. Since then, they have documented more than 8,000 quilts!

MassQuilts has also created traveling shows and exhibits for the museum. They even helped create a book called Massachusetts Quilts, Our Common Wealth. This book shares the history of quilts made in Massachusetts.
