The New England flatwing (scientific name: Austroargiolestes alpinus) is a type of damselfly found only in Australia. It belongs to the family Megapodagrionidae. This amazing insect lives in the streams and bogs of north-eastern New South Wales.

About the New England Flatwing

The New England flatwing is a fairly large damselfly. It has a striking appearance with its black body and pale blue markings. Unlike some other insects, it doesn't have a powdery, frosted look called pruinescence.

How it Looks and Rests

Like other damselflies in its family, the New England flatwing has a special way of resting. When it lands, it keeps its wings spread out flat. This is different from many other damselflies that fold their wings back over their bodies.

The New England flatwing looks quite similar to another damselfly called Austroargiolestes brookhousei. Scientists use small differences to tell them apart.
