Kids Encyclopedia Facts

New Floodwood is a small place in Athens County, Ohio, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

The Story of New Floodwood

New Floodwood has an interesting past! Long ago, it was just known as Floodwood. This area became important because it was a mining community. This means many people who lived there worked in mines, digging for valuable resources like coal.

A Changing Name and Post Office

In 1856, a post office opened in the area. It was first called Rock Oak. A post office is where people send and receive mail, so having one was a big deal for the community! Later, in 1871, the name of the post office was changed to Floodwood. However, the post office eventually closed its doors in 1883. Even though the post office is gone, the name New Floodwood reminds us of its history as a busy mining town.
